Still not totally sure.
I was looking for a radar detector to replace the one that got stolen. I don't like cords hanging from the mirror so that meant a cordless detector. I read many reviews and the Escort S2 got the best ratings for cordless. I couldn't be happier with it.
Detection of K, Ka and Laser are early enough to take action. Laser is definitely less but still adequate. The downsides are battery life. A set of AA batteries lasts me about 2 to 3 weeks of daily use, 3 hours a day.
I use rechargeable batteries so that may affect the life. And it does detect a lot of false X band, though you can program X band out through the programming mode. No one uses X band for traffic enforcement anymore. The pluses are no cord, which means it's easie r to hide from view and the ability to just move it from car to car. I would suggest getting extra mounts for it so you can just move the detector and the visor clip is handy, though it doesn't come with the detector.
I would rate the detector a solid 9 out of It's not quite up to the corded Escort models but is far better than most other manufactures corded ones and not even in the same category with other's cordless detectors.
While many reviewers have stated the Solo's range to not be as good as a wired unit, it is fine for my purposes and I find it helpful.
My only complaint with the S2 is the difficulty of the LCD screen to be read in daylight. The S3 addresses this which is a big improvement and for me, worth the upgrade even though other specifications appear to be the same.
I also like the black color of the S3 better due to windshield reflection. I have never used one of these before but this seemed a good time since I just bought a Supercharged Jaguar. I touched m. I had many quick alarms usually from police cars I could not see and easily escaped getting any tickets.
I like this product quite a lot. I did not like--but will live with--the fact that those roadside flashing signs telling you your speed also set the alarm going IF you were doing say two miles over the limit for that area. I've had this radar detector for two weeks now. I've been impressed by it since I put it in my car. I'm coming from a Bel , and was skeptical of the cordless detectors.
The only weakness of this detector is that its not explosively loud, but its loud enough. Features I really like: Very few false alarms Good range - equal to or better than my Screen is only on when something is being detected no bright display at night and NO CORDS, battery life is better than I expected. Overall, its a great detector. Those skeptical of the cordless like me, this will make you a believer.
Battery powered makes it easy to use. No need to plug it in to your lighter, and there's less clutter. It's very easy to use. It's detects speedtraps with enough advance notice for you to slow down. The only thing I noticed is that it doesn't give as much notice as plug-in type detectors, but for me it's enough. My worplace parking lot is secure , and is just slightly larger than a cellphone.
This is a great piece of equipment, and with just one use, I am sold on it. In addition, I have also read that Energizer batteries silver and blue provided the best, and longest use in the unit it came with two Duracells. I highly recommend the Escort S2 for its portability, ability to detect different bands of radar and it's stealthy, minimalistic appearance.
Go get one now!! The Escort Solo lacks all of the features of current Escort or Valentine products, but it offers the ability to operate on battery power, which makes it very easy to move from vehicle to vehicle.
The battery life can be relatively short with heavy usage and thus, carry a spare set of AA batteries , but the Escort Smart Cord can be used in a primary vehicle and it makes the unit relatively invisible to other drivers during night usage.. This has already saved me several potentially unpleasant discussions with law enforcement.
This detector does everything a good portable one should. The battery life is great. I travel at least 3 times a month and pull this and my GPS out first thing when I hit the rental car lot. I have not put a battery in this detector in 3 months. It is good at detecting radar and has saved me a few times from sure tickets.
There is only one thing it needs is a better suction cup system. My GPS has a real suction cup mount that sticks, this one falls off all the time, and if you get them just slightly bent in your suit case they will not stick. It would be a solid 5 star with a better suction cup mount. Still it is the best travel detector out there. One person found this helpful. I purchased this Radar Detector to travel from Colorado to Florida. I drive a WS6 and get on it through some open straights.
I felt very comfortable using this radar detector. I was kind of worried that I wasnt picking up any signals all the way into Texas but when I did I was glad I had this detector. It let me know I was getting hit with Laser about a mile and a half out. The only issue I had was when I did get pulled over in Texas and I didnt receive any warning from the detector.
I had no reason why either.. The cop was really friendly however and even gave me directions. Overal a very good cordless detector, with a small hiccup as to why I wasnt allerted that one time.
I've owned two Escort Solo 2 radar detectors. I use them because they work well as radar detectors, are cordless, and have an earphone jack. I use the detector on a motorcycle, so must have an earphone jack. The first one I owned and still own has twice been returned to Escort for repair as the earphone jack has twice now come off the circuit board, rendering it soundless with or without the earphone jack.
I imagine this will happen again in a few months with continued ear phone use. I bought a new Solo last week from Amazon, and within one day of use with the earphone jack, the jack and all external sound stopped. Amazon replaced it, and AGAIN within one day of earphone jack use there is no earphone or external sound. I like the Escort, but once my old one comes back from repair it will get used only in my car and without use of the earphone.
What's the point of an earphone jack, if the equipment is too delicate to handle it? Love the portability and it works great. Stopped working shortly after purchase. Seller refused to refund or replace. I have lots of experience using radar detectors, and this by far is one of the best.
I love that it doesn't have a cord too. Just make sure you get batteries that are rechargeable, they will only last a couple days if you use it all the time like I do.
