We all know that reality TV has been exploitative since the genre's inception, but until this Lifetime show, it wasn't "rank a group of children on a pyramid from worst to best weekly" level of exploitative. According to Abby Lee Miller, ranking young dancers was supposed to motivate them to do better. She claimed that since high schools had valedictorians, so did dance studios. The only problem with that analogy is that high schools don't post pictures of their valedictorians on the wall above all the other students and broadcast the humiliating failure of their lowest-ranking students to an international audience.
