Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has released its third-quarter 2024 report on the country’s online gambling market.
Spain’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the third quarter of 2024 amounted to €348.1 million ($366.5 million), representing a 14.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a modest 0.5% rise from the previous quarter. asinos emerged as the dominant contributor, generating €188 million, which accounts for 54% of the total GGR. Betting followed, bringing in €135.9 million, representing 39.1% of the total. Poker contributed €20.5 million, making up 5.9%, while bingo added €3.7 million, equivalent to 1.1% of the overall revenue. No revenue was reported from contests during this period.
As of the third quarter, Spain hosts 77 licensed online gambling operators.
Across Spain’s 51 casinos, gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased by 17.3% year-on-year and 9.5% quarter-on-quarter. Among individual games, blackjack experienced the highest year-on-year growth, surging by 49.4%. Slot machines followed with a 25.8% rise, while live roulette saw a modest 4.7% increase. Quarter-on-quarter, slot machines surpassed blackjack in growth, with rising by 13.7% compared to blackjack’s 12.4%.
In Q3, poker GGR declined both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year, dropping by 19.7% and 23.5%. This decrease was primarily driven by a significant decline in poker tournament GGR, which fell by 29% quarter-on-quarter and 27% year-on-year. Meanwhile, poker cash saw mixed results, with a year-on-year decrease of 13.7% but a quarter-on-quarter increase of 15.4%.
Bingo reported slight GGR growth, up 0.7% year-on-year and 1.7% quarter-on-quarter, marking minimal gains in the segment.
Player deposits in Q3 reached €1.14 billion, reflecting a 23.9% year-on-year increase and a 4.6% rise quarter-on-quarter. Withdrawals followed a similar trend, totaling €802.2 million, up 30.3% year-on-year and 7.4% quarter-on-quarter.
During the quarter, 459,543 new accounts were opened and averaged 153,181 per month. This shows a 1.7% increase compared to the previous quarter and a substantial 42.4% rise from the same period last year. Active online gaming accounts now stand at approximately 1.44 million and represent 33% year-on-year growth.
Marketing expenses for Q3 totaled €131.7 million, which was a significant 40.9% year-on-year increase. Of this amount, €13.2 million was allocated to affiliation expenses, €1.3 million to sponsorships, €66.8 million to promotions and €50.4 million to advertising. All marketing categories showed increases both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year. Year-on-year growth across these categories ranged from 40% to 52%, with the exception of affiliation expenses that grew by 13.7%.
