Attendance can be a flawed metric by which to judge how well a student does in school. There are a million different reasons that a child is not responsible for that could affect how many days they are able to show up. While it's true that they usually do better when they spend more of their time in class, it doesn't seem fair to punish those who have the occasional sick day.
That was exactly the mentality that one elementary school decided to ignore when at the end of the school year, they made a statement rewarding all students who had achieved 100% attendance. On a hot summer's day, they all got ice cream while the other kids were not allowed anything. One parent took to Twitter to complain and was widely supported in her point of view. This is not the kind of positive reinforcement that usually ends well.
