Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his very own battle royale. Sega announced today that Sonic Rumble will be released for iOS and Android later this year.
In a press release and announcement trailer, Sonic Rumble will have players controlling toy figures of characters based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise as they compete in 32-player battle royale challenges to see who is crowned the fastest toy of all. Rovio, the mobile game studio behind Angry Birds, is developing Sonic Rumble, which Sega acquired in 2023 for $775 million.
The trailer, which you can check out above, is very reminiscent of Fall Guys, a platformer battle royale game by Mediatonic that pitted up to 32 humanoid beans together to compete in a race across various obstacles to see who comes out as the last player standing. Alongside common players like the titular blue Hedgehog, Tails, and Knuckles, the announcement trailer for Sonic Rumble revealed that otherwise more obscure characters, such as Blaze the Cat, Jet the Hawk, and Vector the Crocodile, will also be playable.
Sega did not provide a firm release for Sonic Rumble other than Winter 2024, a convenient release window for the mobile game, considering the third film in the Sonic the Hedgehog series scheduled to hit the big screen on December 24.
Sonic fans based in the United States don't have to wait too long to try Sonic Rumble. Sega confirmed in today's announcement that it will be holding a beta test starting on May 24 at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET and concluding on May 26 at 8 pm PT / 11 pm ET. According to Sega, those interested in participating in the beta testing can fill out an application, with registrations ending on May 19.
